Cavalier Bartolomeo
Background
Cavalier Bartolomeo was founded nearly 100 years ago in the Commune of Castiglione Falleto. The namesake of the winery, Cavalier Bartolomeo Borgogno learned how to make wine from his father in the early 1900s.
In 1924, he began to vinify and bottle his own Barolo wines. These vines are still part of the family estate and continue to produce exceptional and powerful wines. Bartolomeo is run today by Dario Borgogno, his wife Marriaje, and his son Alex. The two crus produced are Altenasso (9,000 bottles) found in the hills of Castiglione Falleto and Cannubi San Lorenzo (1,200 bottles) in Barolo.
The wines of Bartolomeo are age-worthy and traditional in style. Old school Barolo produced with classic modernity that encapsulates the fruit and minerality through limited barrel aging and temperature-controlled fermentation.
The Altenasso is an easy-to-understand wine, open and generous when young, turning complex and elegant with 5-8 years of aging.
The Cannubi San Lorenzo is a fine example of this smallest of the 5 legal Cannubi cru sub-zones and is only 2.5ha total. In this prized vineyard, Bartolomeo counts Cerreto and Giuseppe Rinaldi as their close neighbors. The wine is sultry and romantic, with fresh violets and cherry spice on the nose, giving way to a silky smooth multilayered palate.
