Poggio Bonelli
BACKGROUND
The Poggio Bonelli estate spans some 700ha over the Chianti Classico hills and beyond. Wine production here at this ancient site dates back to the early 16th century and perhaps even earlier. Through the ages the wines have been sought after by the Sienese noble families as representative of the best achievement in Chianti and Chianti Classico. During the Middle Ages the estate was owned by the Spennali family and was then past to the Piccolomini family at the end of the 16th century. Poggio Bonelli became the property of the Landucci family in the latter half of the 17th century. Nearly 200 years later at the beginning of the 20th century the estate finally passed to the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena who is the current owner.
The Terroir
Poggio Bonelli cultivates 88ha of vineyards planted to Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot using organic farming and manual harvesting. These rich vineyard lands lie in the most important district of the Chianti Classico zone, Castelnuovo Berardenga where the noblest artisanal Chianti Classico is produced. The soil here is rich with mineral and clay deposited during the Pliocene epoch while the vineyard plots enjoy a South-Southwest exposure. Forests, lakes, trees, and olive groves dot the landscape here and ensure a healthy biodiversity. The vineyards are part of a messo ecosystem that encompasses the entire 700ha estate making it unique throughout all of Chianti. A great ancient cellar lies under the winery carved out under the road. This exciting cavern houses the young wines until they are ready for market.
