Posted @withregram • @wine_meridian The Italian wine market in the United States is experiencing a phase of strong change. According to the importer Cristian Valbruzzoli, the premium segment is now at a standstill: bottles over 70 dollars no longer have the same appeal as they used to and consumers are moving towards quality wines in the 20-25 dollar range.
To weigh on the sector were first the pandemic and then the duties, which caused a 28% drop in sales in recent months. In this scenario, companies capable of maintaining competitive prices find space, while many small import companies risk closure.
Red remains the absolute protagonist, with 85% of consumption, followed by rosés, but today in overproduction and strongly hindered by French competition. Low-end or alcohol-free wines, on the other hand, according to Valbruzzoli, will remain a niche.
The biggest challenge concerns communication: “Made in Italy” works, but the knowledge of the American consumer is limited to a few iconic denominations. Native grapes, wines from the South and even fine bubbles such as Franciacorta remain little known, penalized by the direct comparison with Champagne.
To remain competitive, according to Valbruzzoli, greater collaboration along the supply chain and a review of excessive top-ups in American restaurants are essential. Only in this way will Italian wine be able to regain momentum in a rapidly evolving market.

Posted @withregram • @the_cellar_table The 2015s are on full display. Rich and balsamic in the glass, the 2015 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino shows the ripeness of the vintage while maintaining excellent balance. Cherry sauce, plum, cloves, and a whiff of vanilla spice form its inviting bouquet. It’s cool-toned and sleek with mentholated red berry fruits that glide across a wave of silken textures as moderately grippy tannins add tension toward the close. A pleasantly bitter tinge lingers as hints of dark chocolate and inner cedar tones swirl through the long and slightly chewy finish. The 2015 should continue to drink well for a handful of years, yet I expect its bouquet will quickly decline in another five or so. As for the moment, it’s a total pleasure and is overdelivered in every way.

Massimo Piccin, Founder, Sapaio. In 1999, Massimo Piccin was working in Vittorio Veneto as an engineer in the family construction company when he decided to follow the great passion that he always carried, a love of gastronomy and wine. At the root of his love was a strong determination and a respect for the earth and his surrounding environment. He pursued a dream project, attainable with perseverance and tenacity. Like a mosaic, the path was paved one stone at a time. The first step was the search for a potential real estate investment in a cellar. Piccin included his father, Dario, who not only listened enthusiastically to his son’s project, but also supported him alongside business partner and family friend, Roy Bernard. The search led them to Tuscany, in Bolgheri. The Piccin and Bernard families decided to acquire a property that was at that time a small, sharecropping farm, mainly cultivated on arable lands, with few rows of vines.
Sapaio (sapaio.com) was born in 1999 in Castagneto Carducci, Bolgheri in Italy, from the will of Massimo Piccin, a Venetian engineer moved by a grand passion for wine. A courageous and visionary choice was to invest in a property in Bolgheri, where there was already a small farm, managed by sharecropping of principally arable lands, with few rows of vines. This became an example of how a great passion can bring about the realization ofa prestigious project with the intent to grow and pursue exceffence in an unparalleled territory, home ofa grape designation celebrated all over the world. Today, the winery boasts more than 25 hectares of vineyards and the production of two labels, Sapaio and Volpo.
